Jamyang Khyentse was among the first Tibetan lamas to be photographed. Orgyen Tobgyal Rinpoche notes that there was a reluctance on the part of some lamas including two of Jamyang Khyentse’s own teachers—Loter Wangpo (1847–1914) and Shechen Gyaltsab (1872–1926)—to be photographed as they believed cameras were dangerous.

But Jamyang Khyentse seems to have had no such qualms himself and to have embraced the technology and posed for a great many photographs over the course of more than thirty years, many of which then became sought-after religious objects.
